<br /> The mad men at Adweek recently voted for the Commercial of the Decade (Super Bowl commercials not included) and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/honda/">Honda</a> took top honors over memorable ads from the last ten years by companies like Nike, Budweiser and Sony. That's not a big surprise considering Honda often puts a huge amount of effort into its on-air spots. However, the Japanese automaker didn't win for the commercial you might have expected: "Cog." Though Honda's famous commercial that breaks down a European Accord Tourer into a Rube Goldberg-esque machine was also a finalist, it was beaten by another Honda commercial called "Grrr" that's narrated by Garrison Keillor of all people. You've probably never seen it, but you can <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/18/honda-wins-commercial-of-the-decade-but-not-for-the-ad-you-thin/#continued">after the jump</a>.<br /> <br /> <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/volkswagen/">Volkswagen</a> also made the list of finalists, but the particular ad chosen out of all the comical VW ads we've seen was unexpected as well. Most surprising carmaker with a commercial in the finals: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/saturn">Saturn</a>. Who knew...<br /> <br /> Just for fun we've put all 27 commercials after the break with the auto-related ones at the top, so you can enjoy the swear jar, the creepy-funky Philips clowns, a "rabbit panther thingy with turbines on ice," and the most sad-but-hilarious IKEA commercial we've ever seen. <br /> If you buy a hybrid, you'll be rewarded with excellent fuel economy, right? Well, that's the idea, but sometimes things don't turn out exactly as we had hoped. Such is apparently the case with a number of Honda Civic Hybrid owners who claim that their vehicles don't even come close to achieving the mileage figures estimated by the EPA, leading to a class action lawsuit against Honda.<br /> <br /> Back in the summer of 2007, we <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2007/07/07/autobloggreen-qanda-civic-hybrid-owner-john-true-hes-the-guy-su/">conducted a telephone interview with John True</a>, one of the two men who started the suit. At the time, True claimed he only achieved, at best, 34.6 miles per gallon and had averaged well under that figure. The window sticker showed EPA estimates of 49 city and 51 highway, though the EPA's revised 2008 rating sits at 40 city and 45 highway.<br /> <br /> For its part, Honda admits to no wrongdoing and points out that it was the EPA that estimated those mileage figures. Still, according to <em>The New York Times</em>, the Japanese automaker has agreed to settle the case out of court. If approved, owners of 2003-2008 Civic Hybrids will get a voucher worth up to $1,000 to purchase a new Honda or a check for $100 if they can prove they complained to Honda about their car's mileage.<br /> <br /> Interestingly, the current Civic Hybrid, Insight and Fit - Honda's three most fuel efficient models - are excluded from the list of vehicles eligible for the trade-in or purchase voucher. The two plaintiffs would receive $12,500 and $10,000 and their lawyers would pocket $2.95 million. So, um, is it a fair deal? Perhaps more importantly, is Honda to blame here? In spite of being functionally outstanding, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/honda/">Honda</a>'s odd looking <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/element">Element</a> crossover has never lived up to sales expectations. The funky box never approached the initial sales target of 75,000 units a year, and this year it's on track for barely more than 15,000 sales. Despite its relative commercial failure, Honda has reportedly given the green light to a second generation model. Despite a couple of modest freshenings, the Element is already seven years into its life cycle - considerably longer than typical for a Japanese branded model. <br />

Given the slow sales, why would Honda bother with a new iteration? Honda's executive vice-president, John Mendel, has informed <em>Automotive News</em> that virtually all Element sales are incremental. The Element shares its platform with the much higher volume CR-V, but apparently almost no buyers cross-shop the two vehicles - Element buyers have no interest in the CR-V and vice-versa. If Honda does proceed with a new model, perhaps unique features like the recently introduced dog friendly package will be the key to increased differentiation and success. <br />

We <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/04/sema-2009-mugen-fettled-accord-fit-arent-the-big-honda-story/">knew it was coming</a> and now we've got details. According to the latest reports out of Japan, the Honda NSX will live on, but mere mortals will never get a shot behind the wheel.<br />

As <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/16/new-supergt-contender-from-honda-in-the-works/">previously reported</a>, Honda has been actively petitioning the Japanese Automobile Federation (JAF) -- the organizing entity behind Japan's Super GT series -- to run a new front-engine racer in the touring car championship. A cursory reading of the rule book states that vehicles campaigning in SuperGT must be production vehicles (think GT-R, MR2, SC430). However, Honda's found a loop-hole.<br />
<br />
Just as Toyota has done in recent years with the Supra (it's out of production), the Super GT rules specify that a vehicle's specs and design must be submitted to JAF to be approved. That means that a vehicle can be "production ready," if not actually <em>in production</em>. So for the 2010 SuperGT season, Honda will bring out an all-new race car based on the NSX prototype (seen above), reportedly packing a 3.4-liter V8.<br />

So... Lawyers: 1. NSX's lovers: 0. But at least we get to see it race...<br />

With yesterday's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/08/honda-cr-z-brochure-leaks-out-production-specs-revealed/">leaked brochure</a> of the production version of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/09/30/tokyo-preview-near-production-honda-cr-z-concept-unveiled/">2011 Honda CR-Z</a>, a Temple of VTEC member wasted no time uploading what could be the first Mugen variant of Honda's new hybrid hatch.<br />
<br />
Details on the mods are minimal, but the tuner appears to be working on a dress-up package that includes a new front bumper/splitter, side skirts, rear bumper and wing. Naturally, a new set of wheels are part of the package -- what appears to be a set of 17-inch, seven spoke hoops, likely shod in stickier rubber.<br />
<br />
Given Mugen's strong ties to Honda, expect the full kit to be available through dealers in Japan when the CR-Z goes on sale early next year.<br />

The variable valve-timing obsessives at the Temple of VTEC have scored a leaked brochure of the 2011 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/HondaCRZ/">Honda CR-Z</a>, and in addition to getting a glimpse of the production version of the hybrid hatch, some specs and trim details were included in the document.<br />
<br />
We finally have hard figures on the 1.5-liter engine's output (in JDM spec), with the diminutive four-cylinder putting out 112 horsepower (at 6,000 rpm) on its own and another 14 hp from its electric motor. Just as importantly, the engine creates 107 lb-ft of torque (at 4,800 rpm) with the Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system boosting that by another 57 lb-ft at an oh-so-low 1,000 rpm. Coupled with either a six-speed manual or CVT gearbox, the CR-Z nets a relatively uninspiring 0 to 62 mph time of 9.7 seconds.<br />
<br />
The dimensions haven't changed much from <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/10/21/tokyo-2009-honda-cr-z-coming-to-america-next-fall-with-six-spee/">the "concept"</a> we saw at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/tokyo-motor-show/">Tokyo Motor Show</a> earlier this year, with a 160.6-inch overall length, 68.5-inch width, 54.9-inch height and a wheelbase that spans 95.9 inches. Unfortunately, no word on curb weight.<br />
<br />
Since efficiency is the name of the game, the CR-Z will benefit from LED daytime running lights and turn signal indicators in the mirrors, along with three driving modes - Eco, Normal and Sport - each controllable from a dash mounted switch and with a different color surrounding the gauges based on the mode.<br />

Throughout most of the history of the US auto industry, the Detroit Three sat atop of the sales charts with <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/gm/">General Motors</a> claiming first, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford/">Ford</a> in second and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/chrysler/">Chrysler</a> placing third. In the past few years <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/toyota/">Toyota</a> has clawed its way past Chrysler and then Ford, and now it appears that <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/honda/">Honda</a> too has now passed the Pentastar. Barring some miraculous (and we mean truly outstanding) development, Honda will officially overcome Chrysler to become the fourth largest automaker in the States. Honda holds a rather insurmountable 200,000 unit cushion against its competition from Auburn Hills, MI -- more vehicles than any automaker sold during the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/01/by-the-numbers-november-2009-strengthen-your-core-edition/">month of November</a>. Speaking of November, Chrysler was the only major automaker to see a sales decline, down 18.5 percent with a mere 65,000 units sold. Honda fared better with over 74,000 products sold.<br />
<br />
While Honda's victory on the sales charts is indisputable, neither automaker is making a big deal about it. A Honda exec reportedly told <em>Automotive News</em> that it only worries about it internal sales numbers and doesn't focus on ranks. Chrysler spokeswoman Kathy Graham told <em>AN</em> that the company is on the right track to improve its standing, adding, "We are taking the steps that are necessary to have a good foundation and to build consumer confidence." Graham also said that the company is expecting better results in the future on account of its increased advertising spending. If Chrysler doesn't reverse its sales slide, the next automaker to pass team Pentastar could be <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/nissan/">Nissan</a> -- the Japanese automaker finished only 7,000 units behind Chrysler in November.<br />

Honda certainly can't be accused of running a dog and pony show here at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/la-auto-show/">LA Auto Show</a>, because there were no ponies. They did, however, have the adorable Luna and Toby on hand to demonstrate their clever <a href="http://automobiles.honda.com/element/dog-accessories.aspx">Dog Friendly system</a> on this <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/element">Honda Element</a>. It's essentially a collapsible ramp and pup tent (couldn't resist) with tethers that keeps dogs secure in back while protecting the interior of your vehicle from stains and pet hair.<br />

We've shown you this <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/10/13/ruffing-it-honda-confirms-canine-friendly-element-to-nuzzle-int/">Dog Friendly setup</a> before, but couldn't resist snapping a few pics of the system in action, especially now that it's available. The Dog Friendly package is available on any 2010 Honda Element model for an extra $995. besides the nylon kennel and ramp, the system includes a cushioned bed, a spill-proof water dish, a small 12-volt ventilation fan, seat covers for the second row, and rubber floor mats with a bone motif. Seems like a reasonable price for keeping one's pets safe and secure, especially considering it's a custom fit package from the people who actually build the vehicle itself. <br /> Turns out that the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/honda/">Honda</a> P-NUT is not some sort of twist on the <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2009/11/18/la-preview-are-they-nuts-honda-to-show-off-personal-neo-urban/">UX-3 unicycle thing</a> we saw in Tokyo recently. Instead, the concept vehicle is a three-seat thing enclosed in lots of glass and angular lines. Honda says the P-NUT is ready for one of three possible powertrains: an efficient gas engine, a gas-electric hybrid, or a pure electric set up. There's not a whole lot of room for any of these powerplants up front because the driver's leg room extends almost all the way to the front of the concept. Good thing the power source is intended to be mounted in the rear.<br /> <br /> Let's be clear, this is a pure concept car. There are no side mirrors (but there is a back-up camera). Bumpers? Bah, Honda barely put headlights on this thing. Still, the Honda 'Personal-Neo Urban Transport' could make for a pretty sweet ride through a city, with lots of sight lines for the three inhabitants (a driver in the front middle, two passengers arranged behind and to either side) to see out of. The P-NUT does succeed in Honda's stated goal to get the most space out of a small footprint, and we wouldn't mind some sort of production version BEV someday. It was bound to happen. Think back to when Volkswagen Beetles infested the roads of the globe; there was no shortage of customized Bugs. Tata aims to put the world on wheels with its low-priced Nano, offering mobility to India's massive population for what many Americans just dropped on Black Friday. To stave off an impending swarm of same-same vehicles, and cash in with buyers looking to stand out, New Delhi-based Carnation Auto (not to be confused with North America's Car Nation) has teamed up with Dilip Chhabria's DC Design to offer prefab-custom options for the Nano. <br />
<br />
The endeavor has been given the tagline, "The Artist Meets the Enabler," and it began with tarted-up offerings for the Toyota Innova, creating a car called the Innov8. If the reworked MPV is any indication, we can expect the DC Design Nano to have an interior that apes a Gulfstream, while we can all plainly see what's been done to the exterior. The Nano kit is not yet available, but Carnation says it will be ready to join the already-available Innova, Honda City, and Suzuki Swift kits in 2010. You remember <a href="http://www.nintendo8.com/game/59/paperboy/">Nintendo's Paperboy</a>, right? Back in Triassic era of videogames, you had to deliver the day's print to the right house while not getting run over by a car or taken out by a tire. Not exactly the most direct way to learn bicycle safety, but it was fun. A more efficient way to stay safe on a bicycle is <a href="http://www.getcarspecs.com/honda/">Honda</a>'s new simulator, which aims to teach two-wheeled folks better on-the-road safety.<br />
<br />
Traffic fatalities have fallen in Japan but bicycle fatalities have apparently risen, with teens and older riders the biggest victims. The majority of the problems apparently stem from breaking traffic rules, so the simulator allows riders to learn the ways of the asphalt without getting clobbered by a Daihatsu, and provides both learning and a "rider evaluation session" after the demo. <br />
<br />
Honda is accepting pre-orders now, and the simulator will go on sale in Japan starting next February. For the full scoop, check out the press release after the jump.<br />

The <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/2010HondaAccordCrosstour/">2010 Honda Accord Crosstour</a> hasn't won too many fans amongst the automotive press, and while we're sure it fills the Accord Wagon space in Honda's lineup, the way the Crosstour has a foot both in the wagon and CUV realms still has us scratching our heads. Taking a peek at what's being cross-shopped against Honda's latest offering proves potential customers are in the same boat.<br />
<br />
Fitting every car into a neat categorical box is a fool's errand, but the Crosstour is apparently making everyone wonder just where it belongs. According to early Edmunds' data, buyers seem to think the Crosstour competes most closely with the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/ToyotaVenza/">Toyota Venza</a>, with ToMoCo's wagon-on-stilts being cross-shopping against the Crosstour more than any other vehicle. Other Honda models are also heavily considered against the Crosstour, according to Edmunds Auto Observer, as are a panoply of other cars. Luxury rides like the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/AudiA4/">Audi A4</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/BMW3Series/">BMW 3 Series</a> wind up in the comparison column, as do more traditional crossovers like the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/ChevroletEquinox/">Chevrolet Equinox</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/ToyotaRAV4/">Toyota RAV-4</a>. <br />

While the Crosstour has been called lots of unflattering things, it's clear that figuring out whether it's neatly described as fish or fowl is more of a thorny chestnut. That said, none of this is exactly important if the car is generating showroom traffic and moving units. <br />

We're not so sure about the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/accord+crosstour">Honda Accord Crosstour</a>. It's definitely a Honda, so at least from a marketer's perspective, that''s a big plus, but the big crossover/hatchback//wagon/thing isn't exactly what we'd call pretty, and worse, it isn't even as functional as its competitors. We're not alone in our criticism of Honda's latest, as the Japanese automaker has heard more than its fair share of Crosstour complaints on the Internets. Like it or loathe it, though, the Crosstour is upon us, and Honda dealers need to sell it. We were curious as to how Honda might try to ply such an odd duck, and we have at least a preliminary answer waiting for you <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/20/video-the-answer-to-how-honda-will-market-the-crosstour-animat/#continued">after the jump</a>. <br />

The commercial starts off with about 15 seconds of oddly animated polygon characters playing some smooth, Cosby Show-style jazz. Between 15 and 20 seconds we see the band's instruments fitting in the Crosstour's hatch (though oddly, they don't play up the car's chief storage trick, its hidden storage box). At the 20 second mark, we finally see the Crosstour in the flesh, and the spot wraps up with a few words from actor Kevin Spacey as always. We're far from convinced, but you'll want to <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/20/video-the-answer-to-how-honda-will-market-the-crosstour-animat/#continued">hit the jump</a> to judge the 30 second spot for yourself.<br />

When we sat down with a few Honda execs at <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/SEMA/">SEMA</a>, we were told to "<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/04/sema-2009-mugen-fettled-accord-fit-arent-the-big-honda-story/">watch out for something big</a>" from the automaker's motorsports efforts in Japan early next year. It didn't take much to deduce what they were hinting at: Honda plans to fill <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/17/banzai-burned-honda-reportedly-kills-nsx/">the vacuum left by the recently departed NSX-R in SuperGT</a> with an all-new vehicle for the 2010 season.<br />
<br />
As you'd expect, the Japanese media has hopped all over the recent rumors, with <em>BestCar</em> putting out a rendering of the fabled GT500 class contender. Unfortunately, beyond a possible V10 powerplant, details on the vehicle are scarce and the demise of the production version leaves more questions than answers. According to 7Tune, Honda is campaigning SuperGT organizers to give the automaker a pass on its homologation requirements, allowing the front-engined coupe to enter the series without a road-going version available to the public. Considering SuperGT's stringent requirements, we're not sure how that's going to play out, and since we haven't seen <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/gallery/spy-shots-acura-nsx/#6">development mules testing since June of last year</a>, we're all the more skeptical about Honda's triumphant return to the GT500 ranks. We're hoping to know more before the end of the year, so stay tuned.<br />

While there is no question that <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/05/breaking-lawmakers-reach-agreement-on-cash-for-clunkers-legisla/">Obama's Cash-for-Clunkers program</a> accelerated vehicle sales this summer, a new report by the University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute shows the big winners were from Japan, not Detroit.<br />

According to the study, nearly 85 percent of the trade-ins were from <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/gm/">General Motors</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford/">Ford</a>, and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/chrysler/">Chrysler</a>, yet they only sold 39 percent of the new cars moved off the lots. On the other hand, 8 percent of the trade-ins came from <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/toyota/">Toyota</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/honda/">Honda</a>, and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/nissan/">Nissan</a>, manufacturers who accounted for 41 percent of new car purchases. <br />
<br />
While these numbers may be justified by the large quantity of inefficient domestic trucks and SUVs that were deemed clunkers, customer loyalty also seems to have taken a big shift. About 68 percent of owners who traded in Toyota, Honda, or Nissan vehicles replaced them with another from one of those Japanese brands, while only 43 percent of consumers who traded in Detroit steel purchased another General Motors, Ford, or Chrysler product. The program <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/10/29/edmunds-cash-for-clunkers-cost-taxpayers-24k-per-car-not-4k/">cost the U.S. taxpayers about $3 billion</a>. <br />

Over the last year, Honda has recalled roughly 444,000 vehicles to repair overpressurized airbag inflators in certain 2001-2002 Honda Accord, 2001 Civic and 2002-2003 Acura TL models. According to the automaker, there has been one death and multiple injuries stemming from the defect, which can send small metal fragments through the airbag and onto the vehicle's occupants.<br />
<br />
For whatever reason, the total recall was announced in <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/03/honda-adds-440-000-more-cars-to-airbag-fragment-recall/">two separate increments</a> that were <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/21/2001-honda-accord-and-civic-recalled-due-to-airbags-that-are-eve/">eight months apart</a> - and NHTSA wants to know why. Earlier, Honda had said that the problem was traced back to Takata Corp., which supplied the faulty inflators, and that the supplier had made "incorrect assumptions" about the numbers of parts it had sent to Honda. Says Honda spokesman Chris Martin:<br />

This year's iteration of the annual Design Challenge at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/la-auto-show/">LA Auto Show</a> asks the question: How will a new generation of drivers age 16-23, raised with cell phones, web cams and online communities, emotionally connect to the automobile in 2030? We don't know the answer either, but at least six designers from some of the world's top automakers decided to give it a go with their own ideas.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/gallery/la-design-challenge-2009-competitors/#8"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" align="right" border="1" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/11/gm_01_l_la-dc-09_0007_opt.jpg"  class="right border" alt="" /></a>First up are the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/gallery/la-design-challenge-2009-competitors/">eSpira and eOra from Audi</a>, which are controlled by thought and by the minutest adjustments to the pilot's body. Next we have the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/gallery/la-design-challenge-2009-competitors/#8">General Motors Car Hero</a>... yes, the name is borrowed from the popular <em>Guitar Hero</em> line of games and the car, as you might imagine, "turns driving into gaming." What happens when the inevitable "Game Over" comes at the end? Moving along, we come to the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/gallery/la-design-challenge-2009-competitors/#14">Honda Helix</a>, a shape-shifting vehicle that borrows actual DNA from its owner. Yuck, we don't want to <em>be </em>a car, we want to <em>drive</em> a car.<br />

Which brings us to the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/gallery/la-design-challenge-2009-competitors/#20">Mazda Souga</a>, easily our favorite out of this crop of concepts. Mazda's vision for the future would have each owner design his own car for the low price of $2,000 while paying an additional monthly usage fee that also covers the price of electricity to power the Souga.<br />
<br />
Nissan's vision for the future includes cars that get their power from an electrically-charged roadway called the GRID, and the vowel-challenged <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/gallery/la-design-challenge-2009-competitors/#28">V2G UNLMTD</a> is quickly hacked into an OFF-GRID transportation device by the next breed of young hackers. Lastly, we have the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/gallery/la-design-challenge-2009-competitors/#36">Toyota Link</a>. According to Toyota, future college students will have nearly no income and will rely on mass transit vehicles like the Link that allow them to interact via their various social networks on their daily commutes. Sounds boring to us, but what do we know?<br />

The Sports Car Club of America's board of directors has given the thumbs up to Honda's proposal for a new engine in the class. Next year, competitors will be able to swap out their ancient Ford Kent engines for a new 1.5-liter four based on the Fit. <br /> <br /> Honda Performance Development created the engine so that it was specifically able to bolt up to many contemporary Formula Ford chassis designs with minimal modification, all while providing comparable performance. The air restrictor and ECU calibrations can be adjusted by HPD to ensure performance parity with the series' existing engines. <br /> <br /> The engine's electronically fuel injected engine promises significantly reduced service requirements compared to the Kent, along with better efficiency. The engines will be supplied complete with intake, exhaust and conversion kits. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/03/2010-honda-accord-crosstour-first-drive/">Honda's 2010 Accord Crosstour</a> doesn't yet appear on the Japanese automaker's accessories site, but a few images of aftermarket bits have been shared with an Element owner's forum (viewable below), and we now have some live shots straight from the show floor at SEMA. <br />
<br />
On top are a rack and window deflectors and down below is a set of skirting that completely encircles the car. The effect, especially from the side, imbues the car with the kind of chunky brawn we used to associate with Subaru, before Subaru decided to dip its design pen into the inkwell of elegance. From the stock shots, the mods might even help, but our man Lavrinc on the show floor who took these live shots seems to indicate otherwise. In any case, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/03/2010-honda-accord-crosstour-first-drive/">as our first drive reviewer asked</a>, is it enough? <em>Thanks for the tip, Jubby!</em><br />
