<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/01/breaking-gm-ceo-fritz-henderson-steps-down/">Fritz Henderson's unexpected resignation</a> may have taken top billing today, but it wasn't the only move announced by General Motors today. Michael Richards has been named the new General Manager of Buick GMC effective immediately, with the automaker looking from outside the company to fill the roll. Richards replaces Susan Docherty, who was <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/10/08/fritz-picks-susan-docherty-to-replace-laneve/">named Vice President of US Sales in October</a>. Richards joins GM after a short stint at Trilogy Automotive in Austin, Texas, where he led the use of digital and Internet-based solutions. Richards also worked as a consultant for JD Power where he launched tools for improved vehicle launch profitability and customer satisfaction.<br />
<br />
The bulk of Richards' experience comes from cross-town rival Ford where he worked from 1981-2008. Richards was most recently the marketing brand manager for Lincoln Mercury from 2006-2008. Prior to that he worked as the general sales manager for Ford Customer Service from 2002-2006.<br />
<br />
Regardless of where Richards received his management chops, Vice Chairman and Marketing and Communications chief Bob Lutz likes what he has with the long-time Ford man. "We are pleased to have Mike as a member of the GM family. His vast sales and marketing experience will be invaluable in his new role, as he leads the team building the Buick and GMC brands."<br />

    <title><![CDATA[BREAKING: GM CEO Fritz Henderson steps down]]></title>

Well, that was quick. Fritz Henderson, the recently appointed CEO of <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/gm/">General Motors</a>, is stepping down. Company chairman of the board Ed Whitacre (remember the "<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/09/10/gm-satisfaction-guaranteed-official-commercial-reveals-future/">Satisfaction Guaranteed</a>" commercials, that's the guy) is set to act as the interim CEO until a permanent replacement is found.<br />
<br />
This marks the second CEO that beleaguered automaker General Motors has lost this year, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/29/breaking-ap-says-wagoner-to-step-down-from-gm-immediately/">the first being Rick Wagoner</a>, who was asked to resign by the Obama Administration's Task Force for Autos. Over the last few months, deals that GM had made to offload <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/03/breaking-breagm-board-opts-to-call-off-opel-sale/">Opel</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/09/30/penske-walks-away-from-saturn-deal-cant-gaurantee-future-produ/">Saturn</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/24/breaking-koenigsegg-backs-out-of-saab-purchase-brand-future-up/">Saab</a> have all fallen through, and some have reported on clashing styles between Whitacre and Henderson.<br />

General Motors has just confirmed the news via a press conference being held as we speak. Stay tuned for more as we learn it.<br />

    <title><![CDATA[Global search reportedly on to find successor for Ratan Tata]]></title>

Three years ago the retirement age for Tata's holding company was upped to 75. Although Ratan Tata is only 71, there is no obvious successor to take his place at the head of India's global conglomerate, so the search has begun for the leader of the next act.<br />
<br />
Whoever that person is will take the conductor's baton and guide an orchestra of 98 companies and 357,000 workers. He or she will also need to deal with the twin anchors of Jaguar-Land Rover debt and Corus Steel debt, both of which were brought on by economic freefall after top-of-the-market acquisitions.<br />
<br />
At this point it looks like the CEO spot will be taken by someone outside the Tata family for only the second time in the history of the company. And while Ratan Tata has said "It would certainly be easier if [my successor] were an Indian national," he is open to filling the position with a foreigner. The company has three years to conclude, with Tata expected to step down in 2012.<br />

There are plenty of reasons why <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/DanicaPatrick/">Danica Patrick</a> stays in the news. If it's not her famous <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/10/danica-patrick-runs-into-crew-member-on-pit-lane-at-indy/">temper</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/02/13/danica-patrick-reaches-another-milestone-sis-swimsuit-issue/">photo shoots for <em>Sports Illustrated</em></a> or <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/18/danica-washes-up-for-go-daddy-super-bowl-ads/">racy television commercials</a>, it's her impressive results on the race track. She is, after all, the first woman to <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/20/danica-patrick-wins-indy-japan-300/">win an Indy race</a> and, after finishing third at <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/25/spoiler-alert-2009-indianapolis-500-race-results/">the Brickyard this year</a>, the most successful woman to race the Indy 500. But lately the news has centered over the future of her racing career.<br />
<br />
Rumors first began to pop up that Danica could move on up to Formula One, initially linked with <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/12/correction-honda-f1-not-testing-danica-but-would-like-to/">Honda</a> and then with <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/16/star-spangled-line-up-danica-patrick-linked-to-usf1-race-seat/">USF1</a> before Bernie Ecclestone put his foot in his mouth. Again. Most recently, however, Danica's been <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/05/espn-danica-patrick-close-to-two-year-nascar-nationwide-deal/">tipped to switch to NASCAR</a>. But with the latest announcement, those rumors have been quashed. Well, sorta.<br />
<br />
Announced live today in Times Square on ABC's <em>Good Morning America</em>, Danica has signed a "multi-year" deal (tipped to be three years) to stay in the IndyCar Series with Michael Andretti's team. The four-car squad is restructuring this year, with partners Kim Green and Kevin Savoree splitting off the race promotion arm (responsible for the races in St Petersburg and Toronto), while Michael Andretti stays on to manage the team that drops the Andretti Green Racing moniker in favor of Andretti Autosport. GoDaddy.com has signed on to continue its sponsorship of Danica's No. 7 car. Tony Kanaan and Marco Andretti are locked into long-term deals for two of the other cars, while the fourth car is expected to go to former Rookie of the Year and race winner Ryan Hunter-Reay.<br />
<br />
The announcement of Danica's extended contract would seem to put an end to the NASCAR rumors for at least the next three years, but reports still suggest that the talented Miss Patrick could run a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/09/08/report-danica-patrick-to-drive-nascar-in-2010-remain-with-indy/">parallel schedule</a> in the second-tier Nationwide Series while contesting the full IndyCar calendar as well. Busy <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/24/danica-patricks-godaddy-com-ad-banned-from-super-bowl-because-o/ ">beaver</a> indeed. <br />

When Alan Mulally arrived at Ford Motor Company three years ago, the Blue Oval was in bad shape. New product wasn't exactly pouring in and the company's cash hoard was steadily shrinking. And word on the street is that the corporate culture at Ford was in as much trouble as the product lineup, making change difficult. Now in 2009, it appears Mulally has done the near impossible, turning around Ford's product lineup while supposedly positively altering FoMoCo's corporate culture.<br />
<br />
For all of Mulally's success, there is one problem: he's 64 and can't continue to run the company forever. And although Mulally has given no signals of separating from Ford any time soon, industry insiders are already speculating on who will become his successor. The four names that continue to come up are Ford Americas President Mark Fields, global marketing boss Jim Farley, manufacturing whiz Joe Heinrich and Ford Europe savior Lewis Booth.<br />
<br />
The <em>Detroit Free Press</em> feels the early money is on Fields. The Harvard grad has been with Ford for 20 years, and he's lead some high profile success stories. He turned around Mazda and is currently piloting Ford North America in the midst of what appears to be a substantial product renaissance. Farley has an advantage in that he came to Ford from Toyota/Lexus and is seen by many as a real up and comer.<br />
<br />
By many accounts, Heinrich is a bit of a manufacturing genius. The Harvard Business grad came from General Motors, where he became the company's youngest ever Plant Manager at age 29. Booth has the longest resume and arguably the most examples of success. He appears to have consistently met and exceeded expectations everywhere he has been, including Mazda, Ford Asia Pacific and Ford South Africa. Booth is different from his fellow executives in that he is the only one who isn't in his 40s.<br />
<br />
We have no earthly idea who would become the next head of Ford, and we're guessing that we're at least a couple years away from finding out. We're OK with that, because this Mulally guy appears to know what he's doing.<br />

General Motors shouldn't expect to achieve David Hasselhoff-level popularity in Germany anytime soon. <a href="http://www.detnews.com/article/20091125/AUTO01/911250379/GM--9-000-Opel-jobs-to-be-lost">The <em>Detroit News</em></a> reports that since GM has elected to keep and restructure its Opel division, 9,000 jobs (or somewhere thereabouts) will likely be cut, with the majority of those losses expected in Deutschland. The jobs will be eliminated as part of a $5 billion restructuring plan, which GM hopes to fund with a <em>lot </em>of help from European governments, as well as "employee contributions" (read: concessions). Just <a href="http://www.thedetroitbureau.com/2009/11/germany-rejects-gm-bid-to-help-opel/">don't expect Angela Merkel</a> to break out her Visa debit card anytime soon. <br />

Opel/Vauxhall CEO Nick Reilly wins the Unintentionally Hilarious Quote of the Day award for this line: "We have also said that GM can and will put some money in, as well." What a novel concept. Digressing for a moment: Given that GM is out shaking the coffee can looking for ways to fund the Opel restructuring, it's hard to imagine a scenario where they find a way to save Saab, too. Getting the Opel business in order hardly sounds like it's going to be a picnic, so a rescue of the ailing Swedish automaker has got to be low on the priority list right now.<br />

    <title><![CDATA[REPORT: Toyota may pull people out of CA, relocate to KY and MI [UPDATE]]]></title>

Those jobs are scattered among ten manufacturing facilities and three main office complexes in Michigan, Kentucky and at the company's North American headquarters in Torrence, California. But the downtrodden auto industry and Toyota's recent losses have prompted the Japanese automaker to find ways to cut costs, and the company's California headquarters may lose some workers as a result.<br />
<br />
<em>The Detroit News</em> is reporting that Toyota is relocating product planning, accounting, travel and data services jobs from California to its engineering and manufacturing headquarters in Kentucky and its technical center in Michigan. Toyota is neither confirming or denying the report, but the company did say it isn't going to exit California like Nissan did earlier in the decade, adding "Emphasis has been placed on finding new efficiencies, shared services and enhanced collaboration to address the changing economic conditions and prepare Toyota for the future automotive market environment." Toyota currently employs 10,700 workers in California, a number that will drop if this report proves true.<br />

Evidently Herr Toto Wollf feels otherwise, as the Austrian financier and gentleman racing driver has acquired a minority interest in Williams Grand Prix Engineering.<br />
<br />
This marks the first time in over 30 years of operations that Frank Williams and Patrick Head, the two team principals, have sold shares to an outside party. For his part, Sir Frank insists that business will carry on as usual, that they're not relinquishing control over the team, and that the sale was simply a way of ensuring the team's financial viability. Tellingly, though, he also indicated that Wolff, some 30 years younger than Williams and Head and the veteran of local rallies and international sportscar racing, could take the reins some day in the future. <br />

The announcement comes hot on the heels of reports that Renault - once Williams engine partner during its heyday - was <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/19/report-renault-could-sell-40-of-its-f1-team-to-russian-investo/">considering a similar move</a>. After riding in on a white horse, Koenigsegg Group AB has pulled out of negotiations to buy <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/saab/">Saab</a> from <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/gm/">General Motors</a>, leaving the Swedish automaker's future very much in doubt. In a brief statement issued by GM (available after the jump), president and CEO Fritz Henderson says that the company is "very disappointed with the decision to pull out of the Saab purchase."<br />
<br />
It is unclear what will happen to the brand now, but if Saab fans can hold on to any hope, GM says it will "take the next several days to assess the situation and will advise on the next steps next week." It is worth noting that this is different from the brief announcement that GM issued when <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/09/30/penske-walks-away-from-saturn-deal-cant-gaurantee-future-produ/">Roger Penske's group pulled out</a> from buying <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/saturn/">Saturn</a> - GM immediately announced that they would begin "winding down" the brand. There was at least one other serious bidder interested in purchasing Saab previous to Koenigsegg becoming the preferred purchaser, but it isn't immediately clear if they are still interested, or if their financial backing checked out to begin with. <br />

We suspect that even if Saab is unable to survive as a brand, someone will step in and purchase the assets to the already tooled-up forthcoming <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/9-5">9-5 sedan</a> - perhaps the Chinese - and potentially the newish 9-3/9-3X as well.<br />

As expected, Nico Rosberg will be switching places with Rubens Barrichello, the departing Brawn GP driver who <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/05/williams-f1-signs-barrichello-and-hulkenberg-for-2010/">moves to Williams</a> for next year.<br /> <br /> 24-year-old Rosberg is the son of former World Champion Keke Rosberg, but he has earned a reputation all his own. After winning the inaugural GP2 Series title in 2005, Nico became the youngest driver to test an F1 car and was subsequently hired by Williams F1, for whom he's raced for the past four seasons. This year, he placed a respectable seventh in the drivers' championship, but there's no telling what he can accomplish with his new World Champion team.<br /> <br /> Although he holds Finnish citizenship, Nico was born in Germany, raised in Monaco and races under a German license. Reports circulating the motorsport press indicate that USF1 has signed a provisional contract with Argentine driver Jose Maria Lopez to drive for the new team next season. The arrangement, however, depends on Lopez bringing with him $8 million in sponsorship dollars, of which the young South American reportedly already has 80% in his coffers.<br />
<br />
Lopez has experience in formula racing, but has been off the radar for a few years now. After competing in Formula Renault and Formula 3000, Lopez drove a couple of seasons in the GP2 series and even ran some test sessions for Renault F1 . After that, he returned to Argentina, where he competed in local touring cars and in a few international sports car races.<br />

Only a few months ago, USF1 team principal <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/09/best-buy-to-follow-youtube-into-usf1-sponsorship/">Peter Windsor said</a> the team would absolutely not take on a driver purely on these financial criteria alone, but after balancing their budget, the nascent American grand prix team has apparently decided otherwise. Meanwhile, the team is said to be considering a number of F1 veterans for the second seat, with a 12-name short list that reportedly includes such names as Villeneuve, Montagny and de la Rosa. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/11/penske-andretti-green-contemplating-jump-to-f1/">So much</a> for <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/10/24/report-usf1-wants-nascars-kyle-busch-for-driver-duties/">nurturing American talent</a>.<br />

It used to be that a racing driver would pick his form of motorsport at the beginning of his career and stick with it for the duration. Sure, there have been a few notable exceptions - especially among the Finns - but these days, it seems as if the exceptions are gaining on the norm. F1 drivers like <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/07/10/juan-pablo-montoya-leaving-formula-1-for-nascar/">Juan Pablo Montoya</a> are moving to NASCAR, WRC aces like <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/10/27/next-stop-le-mans-fia-puts-the-brakes-on-sebastien-loebs-gran/">Sebastien Loeb</a> and MotoGP champs like <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/02/musical-chairs-kimi-contests-wrc-finland-rossi-considers-ferra/">Valentio Rossi</a> are trying their hand at F1, while F1 champs like <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/01/schumacher-back-on-two-wheels-for-pro-bike-race/">Michael Schumacher</a> are checking out motorbike racing. But the latest trend has a growing number of current, active Formula One drivers contesting rallies on the world stage.<br />

The most notable is Kimi Raikkonen, who has <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/18/rumormill-raikkonen-to-leave-ferrari-for-new-fiat-rally-team-v/">driven a few rallies</a> behind the wheel of his own Punto Abarth. Now that he's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/18/report-ferrari-figures-raikkonen-schumacher-and-montezemolo-to/">looking to sit out of the next F1 season</a>, all indications are that the departing Ferrari driver will find his way into the WRC. While <a href="http://en.f1-live.com/f1/en/headlines/news/detail/091119122717.shtml">downplaying the lingering prospect</a> of the 2007 Formula One champion <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/18/mercedes-grand-prix-searches-for-drivers-while-dispelling-board/">racing for the newly-christened Mercedes Grand Prix</a> team next season, his managers are reportedly hard at work to get him a WRC drive for 2010. The most likely scenario would place Raikkonen with Citroen: Both the French rally team and the Finnish driver are sponsored by Red Bull, and the rapprochement could could pave the way for Kimi to return to F1 in 2011 for Red Bull Racing.<br />

Even Red Bull's current F1 ace, Sebastian Vettel, has <a href="http://en.f1-live.com/f1/en/headlines/news/detail/091122002750.shtml">reportedly expressed interest</a> in trying his hand at rallying, although his team principal is reportedly against the idea. After <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/04/spoiler-alert-winners-winners-crowned-at-2009-race-of-champion/">winning the Nations Cup</a> at the Race of Champions together with Schumacher three years running, the young German has certainly demonstrated the versatility of his talent. <br />

Meanwhile, the highly-rated Robert Kubica is preparing for his second rally since <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/10/07/robert-kubica-jumps-sinking-bmw-ship-to-fill-alonsos-seat-at-re/">leaving BMW Sauber for the Renault F1 team</a>. After a dismal first attempt, the Pole is set to return to the wheel of a Renaultsport Clio R3 Maxi for the final round of the French Rally Championship at Var next weekend. If Kubica manages to finish this time around, we could yet see more F1 drivers following him onto the rally scene.<br />

But few developments have garnered as much attention as the coup orchestrated by Mercedes-Benz Motorsport, withdrawing from McLaren after fifteen years as its active partner in favor of a more conventional engine supplier role, while buying over 75% of the Brawn GP outfit to enter the sport as a full manufacturer team under the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/16/officially-official-mercedes-benz-buys-75-stake-in-brawn-gp-r/">Mercedes Grand Prix</a> banner.<br /> <br /> The acquisition has drawn <a href="http://en.f1-live.com/f1/en/headlines/news/detail/091117135114.shtml">public criticism</a> from Erich Klemm, employee representative on the Daimler board and chairman of its Corporate Works Council, who decried the move as an unnecessary cost when money is tight and other automakers are withdrawing from the series. Chairman <a href="http://en.f1-live.com/f1/en/headlines/news/detail/091118102808.shtml">Dieter Zetsche responded</a> that the acquisition of the Brawn team will give the company more exposure for less cash: The deal reportedly cost the German automaker some $336 million, but its operating costs are expected to drop to about $74 million annually by 2011, analyzed as far less than what Mercedes was contributing annually to the McLaren budget.<br /> <br /> Zetsche might have more trouble, however, explaining to the board how their star driver slipped through their fingers and defected to the team they just ditched. Considering they're the reigning champions suddenly flush with cash, they shouldn't have much trouble, though.<br /> <br /> Zetsche and Mercedes motorsport boss Norbert Haug are reportedly keen to capitalize with an all-German line-up, fueling speculation that Michael Schumacher could rejoin Mercedes (whose junior driving program gave him his start) and Brawn (who orchestrated all seven of his world championships). Nico Rosberg is thought to already have signed on to switch places with Barrichello, while Nick Heidfeld has been linked with a switch from the departing BMW to its arch-rival Mercedes. Toyota's Timo Glock was also reportedly in the running, but the young German driver signed with newcomer Manor GP instead. It's not every day that you see two World Champions teamed up together - especially not the two most recent. In fact, that bit has never happened before in Formula One history, but that's exactly what we'll see next year as McLaren has announced the teaming of Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton as its drivers for next season and beyond.<br />
<br />
Button's move to McLaren has been long rumored, fueled recently by a visit by the World Champion together with his managers to the team's headquarters in Woking. Negotiations had been ongoing with the Brawn team with which he won his championship this year and which he'll now be departing, but even with Mercedes' injection of cash, the small team apparently couldn't afford the rate which the newly crowned champ was commanding on the open market. <br />
<br />
The announcement will undoubtedly be greeted enthusiastically by British racing fans, placing two British drivers behind the wheel of an entirely British team - and the first pairing of two British World Champions since 1968 when Graham Hill and Jim Clark drove for Lotus. Less so for the newly-christened <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/16/officially-official-mercedes-benz-buys-75-stake-in-brawn-gp-r/">Mercedes Grand Prix</a> team, which is losing both the drivers that brought Brawn GP the championship. <br />
<br />
The move also leaves Heikki Kovalainen without a ride and further confirms fellow Finn <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/18/report-ferrari-figures-raikkonen-schumacher-and-montezemolo-to/">Kimi Raikkonen's lucrative sabbatical</a>. But now that Button's future is settled and McLaren has confirmed its drivers, the rest of the grid should fall into place shortly, so stay tuned. Details in the press release after the jump.<br />

<br /> You probably already know just how bad the employment situation is here in the States, and if you don't, nationwide unemployment is right around 10% - and that doesn't include those who took lower-paying part-time jobs in place of a lost full-time job. That's bad news for us, but at least in one case, that's good news for Volkswagen. No, the German automaker doesn't take pleasure in the fact that the U.S. job market sucks or that consumers aren't buying new vehicles like they were just a few years ago, but on the bright side, the automaker has scored 65,000 applications for its under-construction Tennessee production facility. That's enough people to fit into the typical pro football stadium or enough workers to run 32 assembly plants - and all of those apps were turned in over a narrow three week window. <br /> <br /> According to the <em>Chattanooga Times Free Press</em>, Volkswagen plans to hire 2,000 workers overall; 1,200 for general assembly and another 800 for salaried and skilled positions. Since only one-in-32.5 applicants are likely to be hired, VW is being very selective. Prospective employees will need to pass an aptitude test and be able to perform some basic tasks in order to be considered. Once workers are able to prove their worth, the next step for applicants is to be entered into a lottery for the precious jobs. Only residents of Chattanooga and Hamilton County will be given preferential treatment. <br /> <br /> The German automaker has already hired about 200 workers for the facility which will produce the company's so-called <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/10/28/volkswagen-releases-another-sketchy-look-at-forthcoming-2011-mid/">New Midsize Sedan (NMS)</a>, and a lot more figure to come on-line in the Spring. The rest of the employees will be brought on board closer to the plant's scheduled opening in early 2011.     <title><![CDATA[REPORT: Ferrari figures Raikkonen, Schumacher and Montezemolo to leave their F1 posts]]></title>

The times they are a-changin' in Maranello. As if the departures of Michael Schumacher, Ross Brawn and Jean Todt over the past few years wasn't enough to shake things up for the Scuderia, a new round of change-ups is looming on the horizon.<br />
<br />
First up is Kimi Raikkonen, the 2007 World Champion who Ferrari is paying to vacate his seat in order to make room for Fernando Alonso. Following <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/09/mo-money-fewer-problems-can-raikkonen-earn-more-by-i-not-i/">earlier reports</a> that Kimi would stand to make more by sitting out next season, the Finnish driver's manager has reportedly announced that he'll be taking a sabbatical. This, after negotiations with McLaren broke down over such issues as salary, promotional obligations and freedom to drive the occasional rally. Raikkonen's repeatedly reiterated that he's only interested in a winning team, and could <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/18/rumormill-raikkonen-to-leave-ferrari-for-new-fiat-rally-team-v/">take the year to hone his rally skills</a> instead. A tie-in with Red Bull could provide him with a WRC drive and a return to F1 for 2011.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, Kimi's predecessor, Michael Schumacher, is reportedly changing his role with the team as well. For the past couple of seasons, Schumi has served as a special adviser to the Scuderia, often showing his smiling mug on the pit wall at various grand prix events. But while the seven-time World Champion has signed on for another three years to help with the development of future Ferrari road cars, his F1 role with the team has apparently ended. In an effort to sort out why Schumi won't be active with the team any longer, <a href="http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle.aspx?AR=245158">speculation has escalated</a> that Michael could reunite with Ross Brawn and return to the cockpit as a driver for the newly christened Mercedes Grand Prix team, while others suggest he could join his former boss Jean Todt with a role in the FIA.<br />

Finally, Luca di Montezemolo is eying a change in his role as well. The chairman isn't leaving his post as head of either Ferrari or parent company Fiat, but he has announced that he's likely to step down as head of the Formula One Teams Association. The representative body was formed to negotiate on the teams' behalf with the FIA and Formula One Management, but with Montezemolo's longtime underling Todt now heading the FIA, many have been citing a potential conflict of interest. For his part, Montezemolo says he wants to concentrate on his job as chairman of the Italian automakers. <em>Thanks to everyone for the tips!</em><br />

It's been one heck of a week for Opel. After months of negotiations between Magna and its partners on the one hand and General Motors on the other, the American parent company <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/03/breaking-breagm-board-opts-to-call-off-opel-sale/">opted to hold on</a> to its European subsidiary. In the wake of the decision, Opel's chief executive <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/06/report-opel-president-carl-peter-forster-quits-after-sale-colla/">Carl-Peter Forster jumped ship</a>, leaving the company's future hanging in the balance as he looked to move on to <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/09/report-ex-opel-chief-carl-peter-forster-may-take-over-at-jaguar/">greener pastures</a>.<br />
<br />
The General, eager to capitalize on its decision, has wasted no time in getting its European assets back online, and has already announced the appointment of an interim CEO to steer the company until a suitable full-time replacement can be found. But contrary to <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/08/report-lutz-to-step-in-as-interim-opel-chairman/">reports that suggested Bob Lutz could get the job</a>, GM has named Nick Reilly to the post.<br />
<br />
As executive VP of General Motors and president of its international operations, Reilly is no stranger to Opel and its British counterpart Vauxhall. The English-born exec has held a number of posts for GM in Europe, and presently operates out of Shanghai. While taking the reins at Opel/Vauxhall, Reilly will continue to oversee the auto giant's vast global operations, but will rely on his legion of regional managers to take more direct control. It appears that outgoing Opel chief Carl-Peter Forster may have already lined up a new gig for himself. According to <em>The Times of London</em>, Forster will become an employee of Tata Motors and take the top job at Jaguar-Land Rover. If this appointment comes through, it will be something of a homecoming for Forster who was born and raised in London. Additionally, Forster also ran production at BMW when it owned the late Rover Group. <br />
<br />
Forster left General Motors Europe after publicly disagreeing with the way the company handled the aborted sale of Opel and Vauxhall to Magna International. Forster is not the only one that was not pleased with the results - most news accounts suggest that British and German governments are increasingly unlikely to help GM with its European restructuring. Tata has not publicly commented on the Forster appointment, but it could happen as soon as this week. <br />

    <title><![CDATA[Mo' Money, Fewer Problems: Can Raikkonen earn more by <i>not</i> racing?]]></title>

If you scoffed at the notion that unionized auto workers were being paid not to work, you're going to love this one: According to reports emerging from Europe, Kimi Raikkonen could stand to make more money next year if he doesn't race than if he does.<br />
<br />
The bizarre circumstance comes down to the terms of his departure from Scuderia Ferrari. Kimi was reportedly offered a whopping 17 million euros in order to make room for an incoming Fernando Alonso, but that's only if he doesn't find a suitable seat with another team. If he does, Ferrari will only be required to pay the 2007 world champion <strike>5 million</strike> 10 million euros (<em>corrected</em>). Seeing an opportunity to get a world champion on the cheap, McLaren is reportedly offering Raikkonen only 5 million euros to drive for them, knowing that Ferrari - and migrating sponsor Santander - will cough up the rest.<br />
<br />
That means Kimi would make 15 million euros if he drove again for McLaren next year - which is tipped to be the one and only team he's considering - but 17 million if he sat the year out. Of course negotiations are ongoing, but all things being equal, the Finn could be looking at one very lucrative year off.<br />

German magazine <em>Der Spiegel</em> is reporting this morning that Opel President Carl-Peter Forster has resigned from General Motors following the board's decision to kill the sale of a majority stake to Magna International. Apparently, Forster was disgusted at the way that GM officials handled the whole process. Over the past several months, GM went back-and-forth, first agreeing to sell to Magna, then opting for another bid before returning to Magna, only to finally kill the deal altogether and keep the brand for itself. <br />

A statement issued by GM Europe today declines comment on the whole matter, dismissing speculation about any personnel changes. The statement as translated by Google appears after the jump.<br />
